The sun is a fusion reactor
In 1932 at a University in Cambridge the very first accelerators were used to produce fusion and fission.
The accelerators came from the first electronic circuits to achieve high voltage. Then in 1933 the first fusion neutrons were measured.
21st Century Fusion is based on high voltage charged particle beam accelerators.
The first charged particle beam colliders were built in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. First with electrons and positrons, then with ions.
21st Century Fusion is uniquely based on self colliding beams of charged particles.
21stCenturyFusion technology is an ion beam colliding storage ring called Self Colliding Accelerator. This is based on the greatest technological advances of the 20th Century (accelerators and colliders).
The device operates within the hybrid region of both plasmas and ion beams (Migma). High energy, characteristic of beams; and high density, characteristic of common plasma based approaches.
Because 21st Century Fusion achieves the highest energies of all modern fusion approaches, it requires the highest magnetic fields which have just recently become possible through HTS High Temperature Superconducting technologies. HTS technology companies are claiming they are now capable of cable production at scale, 21st Century Fusion will be the touchstone to determine if this is so.
21st Century Fusion reactors are small, compact and low power, necessitating hundreds of thousands of reactors. They therefore require manufacturing of HTS at scale. The reactor size will be a small commercial building and cost about the same.
Reactor cost depend only on cost of HTS magnets. Vacuum equipment is also very expensive, but it too will scale down in price comparable to volume. Offsetting these prices are the lack of requiring a thermal cycle turbine-generator, mechanical to electrical conversion system.
PROTON BORON 11 FUSION CAN ACHIEVE DIRECT FUSION TO ELECTICAL CONVERSION! This radically reduces size, cost and siting issues.
Proton-Boron11 fusion (p11B) is the cleanest possible fusion fuel. 21st Century Fusion will be capable of the very high energies required because it is based on energetic ion beams. HTS magnets will make them practical, lightweight and efficient. Only p11B fusion allows for direct fusion to electricity production. Not requiring huge, expensive facility intensive steam generator technologies, will make 21st Century Fusion technology the clear leader for fusion deployment.
